A corner of cyberspace, May 2008...
Rhodri: So, are you happy with this book I've written for you about the most-gawped over internet attractions?
Publisher: Yes, we are. Thank you.
Rhodri: Don't mention it. You paid me, after all. And I thoroughly enjoyed writing it. So, how are we going to publicise this thing?
Publisher: We're having a meeting about that presently. Any ideas?
Rhodri: Well, doing a blog would seem like a good idea. I mean, hardly original, but it might drive some people to buy the book, which would probably be a good thing, right?
Publisher: You learn fast. Any other benefits from this blog of yours? What's going to be on it?
Rhodri: Well, if there's one inherent weakness of doing a book about the internet, it's that the book stays static while the internet morphs into dizzying new shapes incredibly rapidly. The blog could be, like, an extension of the book. Daily posts about stuff online that people are clucking over, with that vaguely amusing commentary that isn't fast becoming my trademark.
Publisher: Sounds good. You're not going to try and get any more money from us for this, are you?
Rhodri: No.
Publisher: Right. And where's it going to sit?
Rhodri: Well; while LiveJournal has a horrible reputation for only hosting pubescent outpourings of misery from disgruntled teens, it's as good a blogging platform as I know for creating a sense of community. And look, intelligent people use it. People like
imomus. And
rhodri. So I think I'll try that. Design-wise, it's a bitch to work with, but I'll do my best to get under the bonnet and make it look vaguely acceptable.
Publisher: Sounds good to us. Get on with it.
Rhodri: Alright then, I will.
